About Sterna Environmental


Sterna Environmental is an independent ornithological research consultancy. Sterna specialises in ornithological research and collaborations in Northern Ireland with emphasis on research and monitoring which is of conservation benefit to bird populations and contributes to species biodiversity action plans. Sterna can also provide ornithological support for Environmental Impact Assessments (such as Wind Farm developments) in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and beyond.

Kerry Leonard runs Sterna Environmental. He has 25 years experience in identifying and monitoring birds in Northern Ireland. He has been an active member of Copeland Bird Observatory (Northern Ireland's only bird observatory) for over 20 years and helps run the observatory in his spare time. He is particularly involved with co-ordinating seabird studies on the islands and has a special interest in breeding seabird populations and their conservation.

He is also experienced in carrying out breeding bird surveys for a variety of species groups such as songbirds and waders e.g. Breeding Bird Survey, Common Bird Census, O'Brien and Smith Wader surveys.

He is a fully licensed 'A' BTO Bird Ringing permit holder and trainer, licenced to catch and mark birds using a variety of standard techniques. He is licenced by NIEA for specialist surveying of seabirds and can obtain other Wildlife licences (e.g. colour marking, nest disturbance) on a project by project basis.

Sterna can provide Ornithological expertise to both industry and other Environmental consultancies with high quality of service guaranteed. Sterna Environmental can also call upon other highly skilled experts to assist with research or contract work.
